Employer Partner Case Study: FANUC

FANUC is a world leader in automation and has consistently pursued the automation of factories since 1956 following the development of the SERVO mechanism for the first time in the Japanese private sector.

FANUC UK provides industrial automation solutions, from the supply of CNC controllers, lasers, robots, machining centres, EDM and injection moulding machines to the complete integration of factory automation systems.

FANUC has been working with MTC Apprenticeships since 2017 when the UK HQ moved to Ansty Park, Coventry and the business decided to try a new training provider: “We were aware of the MTC through an existing relationship and were made aware of the apprenticeship programme,” explained Kerry Booth, Human Resources Manager at FANUC.

“We had used another provider for a long time but when we started with MTC, everything changed for us. It all feels so professional and straight away we started to see apprentices coming through at a higher level.”

MTC’s programme encourages a high level of professionalism in all aspects including the softer skills that are so important in the working environment: “At the MTC they are applying a different level of training and the standard of our apprentices has increased significantly. Due to the environment, we expected the knowledge and skills to be of a high level, but it was the maturity and professionalism of each of the apprentices that was immediately noticed throughout the business. They are of a different calibre.”

On why the MTC’s programme has proved so successful, Kerry identified the staff and the environment as vital: “The MTC’s retention of its excellent staff provides a consistency that other providers do not have. They have been able to retain the best trainers and therefore the disruption throughout the apprenticeship cycle is minimal”.

“They create an environment that attracts strong candidates who all want to be influential in the industry. When they arrive with us they already have a foundation of skills and, thanks to the variety of the programme and the staff, the apprentices have already started to think seriously about their careers and the path they might wish to follow.”

Kerry and the wider team at FANUC continue to be impressed by the standard of apprentice that the MTC Apprenticeships programme produces and the internal feedback is always positive: “As the apprentices move between areas, it is testament to them that our Project Managers and Senior Engineers want to retain their services. It is this high standard that means we continue to use the MTC for our apprentice training and, while they continue to produce highly-skilled engineers, we will continue to work together.”
